The feminine side of music has always been overlooked, primarily to the fact; majority is masculine and it’s pretty much hard to break it into the scene, but amongst those who stand by their imprint, this particular being does it with ease.
Sumthin Brown first became part of my playlist through mixtapes 6 years ago. As a curator, teacher and selector, which she is primarily known for, and the exquisite selection and tastes in soul, jazz, funk and hip hop make it hard to ignore her trade. Representing a variety of musical orientations, Sumthin Brown carries more than just music or melodies through her messages, but also creates and provides awareness and highlights cultural and socio differences in music that we probably, either overlook or haven’t experienced yet.
One thing for sure she’s African and the best message I picked up was through her latest offering MERAKI : SUMTHIN’ With Soul 2 which carries a total of 59 minutes of nothing but symphonical curation that speaks to your inner being, she knows how to manipulate time, she knows how to reach the inner core of relaxation and takes it all out with just a simple listen.
Away from her compilation list, she’s part of-affiliation with a well-known femme movement knows as ‘’Remember SHE’’, a musical movement by lee da cocktail which I believe resonates within the concepts of highlighting the importance of female spinners through music and it has created a well perfect craft to solidify its imprint.
I call her a Queen, Lady of Melanin and The Black Medusa, and she continues to instill lessons, sharing, creativity and unity in all her hard touches.
